How to Market A Small Business

How to Market A Small Business

You don’t need thousands of rands to market your small business, you just need patience, time and a little help from the web. Marketing your business doesn’t need to involve a cinematic masterpiece of an advertisement that runs in every household in the country – sometimes it’s as little as suggesting your service to a stranger who looks like they might benefit from it. Here are a few tips on how to efficiently market your business without spending a fortune.

Know Your Target Market

When you know who you’re aiming your marketing at, you can save yourself countless hours of time and effort. If you know your perfect audience, you can craft a marketing message that you know will resonate with them. From here, you can make sure that message gets to them in the fastest, easiest and most efficient way possible. This means that your message will be seen by the right people, in the right way and at the right time. Right?

You can also use your target market to your advantage. Ask your previous clients how they found out about you and what would have made their experience better. Feedback, whether it’s positive or negative, is an amazing way to improve your marketing.

Be Reachable

This doesn’t mean being an arm’s length away from your potential clients at all times (although it would be great to make them feel like you are). It simply means that your clients (and potential clients) can reach you in a variety of ways.

Your clients need a clear means of communication that they can use easily and quickly – it's no use having your only means of communication being Mxit or BBM. You 100% need a professional email (i.e. anything similar to s3xyl0ver34@yahoo is definitely not the address you want to use for your online accounting business). In addition to a great email that you frequently check, you can also have a professional and user-friendly website.

Be Professional

This includes everything from your email correspondence to your store front. The way you handle your customers might not be a direct reflection of the quality of your product/service, but being unprofessional can drive clients away in a heartbeat. Make sure that you (and people/things associated with your brand) are respectable, friendly and professional.

Market Outside of the Office

Your brand doesn’t sleep. If you have a website, people can see it 24/7, 365. While we don’t suggest losing sleep to market your brand on Facebook at 3am, we do however recommend that you are always well-informed and ready to speak about your business at a moment’s notice. You could be spending time with new friends who might need your expert help on a specific project, or you might be introduced to a potential client by a colleague. No matter how you meet your audience, be sure that even without looking at your website or business card, they’ll know what your business is all about.

We hope that these tips will help you get a clearer idea of what you need to do to successfully market your small business.
